The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) have requested a 90-day extension to release investigation reports related to an alleged drug case involving President Bola Tinubu. The agencies submitted their request to a United States District Court, citing the need for additional time to complete their searches.
The court had previously ordered the FBI and DEA to process non-exempt records following a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request. The request was filed by an American legal transparency advocate, who sought information on a Chicago drug ring that operated in the early 1990s. The advocate had previously submitted multiple FOIA requests targeting records related to Tinubu and other individuals allegedly linked to the case.
In response to the agencies’ request, the plaintiff opposed the proposed 90-day timeline, arguing that many relevant documents had already been identified. He suggested that the agencies should produce unredacted versions of the identified records within a week and complete the remaining searches within 14 days.
The court had earlier ruled that the agencies’ refusal to confirm or deny the existence of the requested records was inappropriate. The legal battle continues as both sides await further proceedings, with the agencies expected to provide updates on their search efforts in the coming monpiths.
