Tinubu Signs Bill Raising Judges’ Retirement Age into Law

The bill setting a universal retirement age for judicial personnel was signed into law by President Bola Tinubu on Thursday.

The president promised to bolster the judiciary and give judicial officials more power, according to a statement from Abiodun Oladunjoye, Director of Information at State House.

The “Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (fifth altercation) (No.37) bill, 2023” is the first bill that President Tibunu has signed after assuming the oath of office on May 29.

The retirement age for high court judges and others has been raised from 65 to 70 years old by a new statute.

In accordance with section 6(5) of the 1999 constitution (as modified), the Act also established standard pension entitlements for judges of “superior courts of record”.
