President Tinubu Concludes Successful Trip to Tanzania, Delivers Keynote at Energy Summit

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of Nigeria has returned to Abuja after a highly productive two-day visit to Tanzania, where he attended the East African Energy Summit and delivered a keynote address on regional energy collaboration and sustainable development. The trip underscored Nigeria’s commitment to strengthening bilateral ties with Tanzania and fostering Pan-African cooperation in the energy sector.

Highlights of President Tinubu’s Speech at the Energy Summit

President Tinubu’s address at the summit, themed “Energy Transition and Economic Growth: A Unified African Approach,” was a focal point of his visit. The Nigerian leader emphasized the critical role of energy security in driving Africa’s economic transformation and called for increased collaboration among African nations to harness the continent’s vast energy resources.

1. Call for Regional Collaboration:

President Tinubu stressed the need for African countries to work together to address energy poverty and accelerate the transition to renewable energy. He highlighted Nigeria’s efforts in expanding its energy infrastructure, including investments in solar, wind, and hydroelectric power, and urged other nations to adopt similar strategies.

2. Energy as a Catalyst for Industrialization:

The President noted that reliable and affordable energy is essential for industrialization and job creation. He called for the establishment of a continental energy grid to facilitate the sharing of resources and expertise, which would enable African nations to achieve energy self-sufficiency.

3. Commitment to Gas Development:

President Tinubu reiterated Nigeria’s commitment to leveraging its vast natural gas reserves as a transition fuel. He announced plans to expand Nigeria’s gas pipeline network and export capacity, positioning the country as a key player in the global energy market.

4. Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs):

The President emphasized the importance of aligning energy policies with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). He called for increased investment in clean energy technologies and urged international partners to support Africa’s energy transition efforts.

5. Youth Empowerment and Innovation:

President Tinubu highlighted the role of young Africans in driving innovation in the energy sector. He announced plans to establish a Pan-African Energy Innovation Fund to support startups and entrepreneurs developing sustainable energy solutions.

Bilateral Meetings and Agreements

During his visit, President Tinubu held bilateral talks with Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan. The discussions focused on strengthening economic ties, enhancing trade relations, and exploring opportunities for collaboration in the energy and agricultural sectors. Both leaders agreed to establish a joint commission to oversee the implementation of agreements reached during the visit. 

President Tinubu returned to Nigeria on the evening of January 29, 2025, where he was received by top government officials at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja. In a brief statement upon his arrival, the President expressed optimism about the outcomes of his trip, stating that the agreements reached with Tanzania and other participating nations would yield significant benefits for Nigeria and the continent as a whole.
