President Tinubu has ordered a review of the controversial N8,000 Conditional Cash Transfer (CCT) scheme, following widespread protests and criticism from various stakeholders.
The CCT, which was launched last month as part of the government’s efforts to alleviate poverty and boost the economy, provides a monthly cash payment of N8,000 to selected poor and vulnerable households, on the condition that they meet certain criteria such as sending their children to school, attending health clinics, and participating in community development projects.
However, the scheme has been met with resistance and backlash from many Nigerians, who have accused the government of being insensitive, corrupt, and out of touch with the realities of the masses.
In response to these concerns, President Tinubu has directed the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development to conduct a comprehensive review of the CCT scheme and submit a report within two weeks.
President Tinubu also urged Nigerians to give the scheme a chance and cooperate with the government in its implementation. He said that the CCT is part of his administration’s vision to build a prosperous and inclusive Nigeria for all.
He assured that the government is committed to transparency, accountability, and fairness in the management of the scheme and other social intervention programs.
He appealed to Nigerians to shun violence and embrace dialogue as a means of resolving their grievances. He also warned that anyone found to be sabotaging or disrupting the scheme will face the full wrath of the law.
