Nigeria’s Agriculture Minister Asks for Patience on Food Crisis

Senator Abubakar Kyari, Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, urged Nigerians on Wednesday to be patient and supportive of the government’s efforts to address the food crisis.

He addressed the House of Representatives in Abuja, emphasising the importance of mechanised farming, enhanced security, and increased agricultural investment.

He stated that the government was conscious of the issues posed by growing food prices, inflation, climate change, and insecurity, all of which had an impact on food production and access.

He highlighted that the government had declared a state of emergency for food and water, and that numerous initiatives were being implemented to mitigate the effects of the situation.

Among the initiatives include giving farmers access to grain and fertiliser, bolstering their defences against lawbreakers, and offering a monthly stipend of $10 to $12 million for a period of six months.

In addition, he stated that the government was collaborating with partners to improve nutrition and food security, particularly for children and other vulnerable populations.
