Court Orders DSS To Charge Or Free Suspended CBN Governor In One Week

The suspended Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele, who has been detained by the Department of State Security Service (DSS) since June 10, has been granted a one-week ultimatum by a High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to be charged to court or released.

The order was given by Justice Hamza Muazu on Thursday while ruling on a fundamental human rights suit filed by Emefiele against the DSS and others. The judge said that the DSS has the power to arrest and investigate Emefiele, but it must do so within the law and respect his right to fair hearing.

Emefiele had sought to void his arrest and detention as unlawful and demanded N5 million as damages. Emefiele was suspended as CBN governor by President Bola Tinubu on June 9 and arrested the next day at his Ikoyi, Lagos home over allegations of corruption and mismanagement of
