Lagos to enforce annual vehicle proof of ownership fee in July

The Lagos State Government has announced that it will begin the enforcement of the annual vehicle proof of ownership fee in July, in line with the Federal Government’s directive.

The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Transportation, Mr Abdulhafiz Toriola, said this at a joint news conference in Alausa, Ikeja, on Tuesday.

He said the fee of N1,000 would be paid by all motorists annually for proof of ownership certificate verification, which would contain vital information about the vehicle and its owner.

He said the initiative was aimed at streamlining and enhancing the process of vehicle ownership verification and ensuring compliance with legal or regulatory requirements.

He said the initiative was also in accordance with the National Road Traffic Regulation 2012 as amended, which states that there shall be proof of ownership certificate for all registered vehicles and a central database for vehicles and drivers for the federation.

He said the Lagos State Governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, had approved the commencement of the initiative in Lagos State and urged the public to cooperate with the government and its agencies.

He said the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) would be responsible for issuing the proof of ownership certificate to motorists upon successful completion of the necessary requirements and procedures.

He said the proof of ownership certificate would help track the real time status and guarantee the integrity of all vehicles registered on the National Vehicle and Identification Scheme (NVIS) database.

He said the proof of ownership certificate would also serve as official documentation of a vehicle’s legal owner and enhance security administration in the state. (246 words)
