Former Nigerian Super Eaglet Jailed in Denmark for Assaulting Three Women

A former Nigerian Super Eaglet player, Akinkunmi Amoo, has been convicted and sentenced to one year in prison by a Danish court for sexually assaulting three women. Amoo, who plays as a winger for F.C. Copenhagen in the Danish Superliga, was arrested in September 2022 after the women reported him to the police.

Amoo, who was dubbed as the “Nigerian Messi” by some fans, had joined F.C. Copenhagen from Hammarby IF in Sweden in January 2022 for a record-breaking fee of around €4.4 million. He had scored one goal in four appearances for his new club before his arrest.

Amoo had also represented Nigeria at the 2019 Africa U-17 Cup of Nations, where he scored one goal in a 5-4 win against Tanzania. He was one of the finalists for the Allsvenskan young player of the year award in 2021.

The court found Amoo guilty of sexually assaulting three women in different locations in Copenhagen between August and September 2022. He was also ordered to pay compensation to the victims and to undergo psychological treatment.

Amoo’s lawyer said he would appeal the verdict, claiming that his client was innocent and that the women had consented to the sexual acts.
