Nigerian government has announced a 114% salary increment for civil servants, including President Bola Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shettima, and other political office holders. The salary adjustment, which will take effect from January 2024, is aimed at cushioning the effects of inflation and improving the welfare of workers.
According to the Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, the salary increment was approved by the Presidential Committee on Salaries, which was chaired by the Finance Ministry and co-chaired by Ngige himself. He said the committee had embarked on a review of the current pay structure and came up with the new salary scale after extensive consultations with stakeholders.
Ngige said the government was committed to fulfilling its promises to the workers and ensuring that they enjoy decent living standards. He also commended the workers for their patience and understanding during the review process.
The salary increment has been welcomed by many civil servants, who expressed their gratitude to the government for listening to their demands. They also praised President Tinubu for his visionary leadership and his commitment to improving the economy.
President Tinubu, who was elected in 2023 on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC), had earlier promised to review the national minimum wage to reflect current realities. He had also chosen Kashim Shettima, a former governor of Borno State and a senator representing Borno Central, as his running mate.
Shettima is widely regarded as a loyal and competent ally of Tinubu, who has been instrumental in tackling the Boko Haram insurgency in the North-East. He is also known for his philanthropic activities and his support for education and empowerment of women and youths.Â
