The Presidency has officially dismissed circulating rumors suggesting the removal of Professor Mahmood Yakubu, Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). The claims, which gained traction on social media, alleged that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had replaced Yakubu with Professor Bashiru Olamilekan.
In a statement released on Monday, O’tega Ogra, Senior Special Adviser to the President on Digital Media, labeled the reports as “fake news.” He emphasized that any such decision would be communicated through official channels, such as the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF). “Disregard any fake news making the rounds about the replacement of the INEC Chairman,” Ogra stated.
The Presidency’s clarification comes amidst heightened political speculation and misinformation. Professor Yakubu, who has overseen Nigeria’s 2019 and 2023 general elections, remains a pivotal figure in the nation’s democratic process. His tenure has faced scrutiny, but no official announcement regarding his removal has been made.
This prompt response from the Presidency aims to quell any potential unrest or confusion stemming from the unverified reports. Citizens are urged to rely on credible sources for updates on national matters.
